San Jose, Costa Rica (Escalante)

(Early-2018, 2 WEEKS)

  • Cheaper than expected. I was staying in the Escalante neighborhood, but before I got there I was prepared for a very expensive 2-weeks, but you can find a meal for $8, haircut for $15, 10-minute Uber ride for $2–$3, gym membership for $35, and a shot of alcohol for $4.
  • The Spanish is really easy to understand
  • No military (though there is a small unofficial force that deals with border disputes, hostages, etc.)
  • Volcanic ash in the air is a year-round issue
  • The main park (La Sabana) is not well maintained. The man-made pond has really dirty water and all the grass is dead.

Known For: no military, tourism, "pura vida"
