Forty-five pages in and I’m OUT. How’d I get duped? Well, I saw a viral TikTok video of some fake influencer “randomly” interviewing a fake rich guy. The setup was great! Very authentic looking. First question: what’s your favorite book? Ego is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday. I figured that was an authentic recommendation, this guy is rich, I’ll buy the book. And, it’s got 20,000 reviews! Well, the book is trash. I used to be one of those readers who finished any book they bought. Not anymore. This book is trash.

It’s got all the makings of a blockbuster book: short chapters, fun stories, 6th grade reading level, and intriguing chapter titles like Don’t Be Passionate, but the content is empty. Chapter To Be or To Do? documents a military man who apparently was not famous, no one knew about it, he held no high positions, did not make a lot of money, etc., yet the author profiles him as some kind of humble, behind-the-scenes influencer. This is not a deeply researched book, it’s rather a college essay where you plug in the first example’s you find to prove your point. The very next chapter, Become a Student, says to always be a student even in the face of success. This is such obvious advice, it’s paint to read, but I’m thankful the chapter was only 6 pages long.
