“‘Pay attention to what’s out there so you’re not copying everyone else.'” (p.84)
I hate these books. They are well produced, easy to follow, easy to read you choose them over the rest of the books in your library. Every chapter and sub-section has an engaging title that makes you want to read it but as we say in Spanish ‘poco profundo’ – the information never gets deeper than ankle height.
Welcome to my Hook Point – How to Stand Out in a 3-Second World book summary!
One-Sentence-Summary: Package your message, whether an Instagram story, a job interview, a movie trailer, a first date, or a sales call, as a hook you can get out in 3-seconds.
That’s all, folks. I read the book, so you don’t have to. Don’t get me wrong, learning how to speak effectively and efficiently where you use fewer words to get out more information AND deliver that information in an engadging style is great advice! But the rest of the book doesn’t provide much value.
As lovely and easy to read as this book is, all mildly successful creators in the process know one thing: a large audience solves a lot. I could kill myself to find the best hook points, which this book is about. But even if I find epic hook points, they may or may not hit. Then, I look to a larger competitor to see that one of his non-edited videos without a proper cover photo did better than most of mine. Then you see some videos with objectively great hooks that perform poorly. That’s because “some of the concepts that are home runs are the ones you never would have expected.” (p. 59) This tells me it’s less about hook points and more about current market sentiment and algorithm trends.
