I’ve stopped reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.

Initially, I purchased this book as I was an awkward high schooler, shy, and not popular, so I thought it would be interesting. I’m stopping it after numerous gay characters. I went to an all-male high school of 1,600 boys, and I have zero stories involving gay men in those four years. It’s just not common. It doesn’t need to be in every book and movie. However, this book was published in 1999 ahead of the woke ideology that started to spread a decade later.

Additionally, the main character, Charlie, was sexually abused by his aunt. Sure, it happens in real life. A quick AI search says 1-3% of boys under the age of 18 are sexually abused by a female in the family. Seems hard to believe. But even at the small percentage, the book is too far from what I was hoping for, and I’ve lost interest.
