One-Sentence-Summary: Steve Kaufman, a famous language learner and founder of LingQ, writes an autobiography with light instruction towards the end on how he learns languages.

I’ve finished reading The Way of the Linguist by Steve Kaufmann.

You must know your author. I am reading this book to learn languages efficiently. I should know how the author speakers foreign languges to evaluate how effective his strategy. So I researched:

B2 – Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, German, Swedish, Cantonese

Best Spoken Languages – French, Japanese, Manderin, Spanish

Steve says that he speaks nine language, four fluently. Now, before we investigate his claims, you should know that I speak Spanish at a B2 level and Portugese at an A2 level. I went down a rabbit hole on famous ployglots and found out some things. Most are not fluent in most of the langages they claim and it’s in their best interest to keep that inconvienence as quiet as possible. Some are straight up frauds.

The issue is with the deifnition of “fluent”. For me, fluent is C1. This is near your native tougue minus some slang, cultural references, and deep, nuanced topics, but you can express yourself in every subject you could in your native tongue.

I found this Reddit post and searched for the word ‘accent’. There’s nothing wrong with an accent, but you will lose it slightly as you get more fluent, and especially as you get into the C level. Spanish is one of the four languages that Steve says he speaks fluently. A native Spanish speaker says, “If he were teleported to a Spanish speaking country in the middle of the night (without a cellphone for some reason), he wouldn’t starve.” That’s just not right for how confident Steve is with his Spanish.

His French and Swedish got compliments, though referencing his strong accent.

Steve speaks about pronunciation in his book. I do not believe he has good pronunicaiton in more than a few of the languges he speaks, and those are the ones he grew up with (French, English, Swedish).

Steve’s strategy is to:

• First, listen
• Then, read and to do that a lot
• And, you should memorize words and phrases with flashcards

He suggests ignoring grammar except in specific instances you really need the help.

I guess I’m just finding it hard to put full faith in his routine. Do I think he’s a fraud? No. But I speak better Spanish than Steve based on this video. So where is he really at in the rest of the languages he claims fluency?

The low rating is based on: It’s a short book at only 140 pages, 80% of which are an autobiography, while interesting, but irrelevant unless you want to know more about where Steve comes from. It’s also dated and published in 2005. Only the skeleton is relevant today.
