One-Sentence-Summary: Jack Black (1871 – 1932), a scoundrel, low-life (attributed to his childhood), documenting his scum relationship with society, given an umpteenth chance by a San Franciscan and eventual (alleged) suicide by drowing.

Jack Black is a piece of shit. Jack Black exists today. They make society inefficient whenever possible and cause the need for rules, which takes precious time and attention from upstanding citizens. In Chapter VIII, Black documents the picking of a safe which resulted in the owners of the safe, “[accusing] each other of the theft, almost [fighting] with pistols, and [disolving their] partnership..” (p. 94)

This blog will contain both my summary and review of the book You Can’t Win.

(Mostly) beautifully written. Per me, let’s start with the bad: while an unique life, at least compared to the 2000’s where this life of hitching free rides on trains while committing (mostly) petty crime doesn’t exist, it’s a bit long and monotonous at times. The editor (I’m sure it wasn’t Jack Black), was very good with chapter-ending quotes like this, “Johnnie starting home, where he never arrived, and we to the Coast,” (p. 137) and, “Then swiftly came the tragic night that sepratted us foever – I to jail and the kindly, lovable Smiler to his grave.” (Chapter 7) These sentences, as you know the characters by this point, encourage you to keep reading.

I stopped reading becuase this is an entertainment-only book that I’m currently not interested in. I want to read books on deep knowledge, not something written by a lowlife who was given a second chance.
