Cebu City, Philippines “Queen City of the South” (Mango Drive)

(Mid-2023, 1 MONTH)

Overall: A good choice for those who like city vibes but also don't want to be in a purely touristy place, as is common in many asian cities. IT Park is, by far, the best place to stay, walkable, rather clean, business center. A large benefit of Cebu City is the amount of day/weekend trips available and a similar, although on the hotter/humid side, climate all year round.

Dew Point (a better measure than humidity): 69F

Coolest, most unique, hidden gym restaurant: Aqua Dining Experience

The Airbnb I stayed in was located on a high floor in the Horizons 101 building, all taxis know where it's at on Mango Avenue. The host was very responsive, shipped me a forgotten item, and it actively improved the space.

  • The best cafe and coworking scene I've experienced in a long time. Plentiful, high-quality, comfy chairs, great variety (even charges designed into the cafe, see image above)
  • Colon Street, oldest street in the country
  • Haircuts come with a massage (true in Manila, too) which is awesome, but barber skill is poor.
  • I've gotten a foot massage at a spa and a back massage, both times maybe the worst I've ever had 🙁
  • Airbnbs are really bad, even filtering at the top prices. All look the same, some bigger.
  • Cebu City is the oldest city in the Philippines.
  • Some of the worst grocery stores. Low quality fruits/veggies, loaded with junk food yet expensive. The few nicer grocery stories are extremely expensive.
  • Nustar casino is NICE!
  • Almost every place has watermelon juice (which, if you didn't know, is the best type of juice
  • Only place where street food doesn't appetize me. Same with Filipino food, not enticing.
  • Barangays means neighborhood
  • The city is considered the birthplace of Christianity in the Far East
  • SM Seaside mall has 2 hours free wifi (with Philippino phone number) whereas all others usually have only 1 hour.

Known For: Lechon, sinigang
