Melbourne, Australia

(Early-2017, 1 MONTH)

  • Basically America, at least the parts I’m familiar with (neither a pro nor a con)
  • Lots of unnecessary laws, especially when it comes to alcohol and bars. I found it odd that liquor shops had to close on a particular religious holiday (I forget which one), forcing religion on citizens. You can only buy alcohol from Bottle Shops. You must wear a helmet on a bicycle, no matter what age. Hot water cannot exceed 59 C. Etc.
  • They LOVE American politics. It was on the TVs at the Hostels I stayed at, taxi drivers asked me about it, etc. I don’t think I went a day without being asked about Trump. They all held very similar viewpoints about Trump which I felt was very interesting.
  • I really like the layout of the city. There’s the city center, and then everything built around it. Great public transit, easy to get around.
  • Lots and lots and lots of young people. I remember sitting in the subway one day and looking around and not seeing anyone older than 35 years old.
  • Lots of early 20-something travelers as they bring in millions every year on a yearly visa
  • Street performers have to audition to play on certain streets
  • Hard to find Oatmeal, instead meusli
  • Bogans are what American’s would call hicks or white trash
  • Pronounced Mel-bin

I also visited Syndey, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast.
