Barranquilla, Colombia (Alto Prado)

(Late-2019, 1 WEEK)

Final thoughts: A pleasant surprise. Hot and humid, but not nearly as bad as Cartegena. Very friendly locals and attractive. NOT at all a tourst destination which is a huge plus. It feels authentic (and a little bit like Cali).

  • The taxi's don't have meters. Instead you're supposed to know the rates. About 7k for a 10 minute drive.

Pro Tip: never ask 'How much?' as it shows you don't know what you're doing and opens the door for easy ripping off. Instead, give less money than you think and let them ask.

  • Malecon Puerto de Oro is a nice and new riverside promonade
  • Not a walking city! Given the heat and the layout of the city, auto's are preferred.
  • Coolest thing to do: Go to Bocas de Ceniza which is where the river meets to ocean. Go to the neighborhood of Las Flores and catch a "train" to the end of the "pier"
  • The city is so spread out. The positive is that traffic is not as bad as it could be.
  • Three biggest shopping centers: Buenavista (nicest and biggest), Viva (my favorite with cutest girls), and Villa Country (smaller and older)
  • No coffee scene. Juan Valdez is your only option
  • Beaches are north of the city in Puerto Colombia
  • Not any cheaper than Medellin
  • Fun daytime activity: Go to Virtualand in Villa Country shopping center ofr virtual reality gaming
  • Gorgeous women, as usual
  • Lots of casinos without automatic shuffle machines (and they give out free food during certain hours)!
  • Nightlife spots to visit: Frogg Club, Discolo, Coco Beach, La Troja, Bourbon St.

Known For: Shakira, 2nd largest Carnival festival, Ventana al Mundo/Window to the World (by Technoglass), La Troja
