Medellín is Kid- & Wallet-Friendly

I dedicate this blog to my four nephews (Declan, Camden, Connor, and Luke) and to my two nieces (Avery and Briley) and to their parents who need convincing to hop on an international flight of at least 9 hours and one layover to venture down to an unknown part of the world in South America rumored to be peligroso or dangerous. Of course, I’m talking about my beloved Colombia. And not only is it Spring all year round. Not only can you rent a mansion penthouse for less than a mortgage in the USA. Not only is a coffee $2 or a taxi ride across the city $9. Not only do you have greenery all aroung you and either mountain or valley views at all times, but it’s also family friendly. While walking home yesterday (yes, it’s also walkable), I saw something that had otherwise been invisible to me.

That’s a nice child-friendly park in between The Belmonte Penthouse and Parque Lleras.

Whether you’re visiting Medellín for a week or living here full-time with kids in tow, this vibrant city and its lush surroundings offer plenty of family-friendly and safe fun. From adrenaline-pumping ATV rides to peaceful botanical gardens, here’s your ultimate guide to unforgettable family adventures in and around Medellín.

🌿 1. Botanical Gardens | Free

Medellín’s lush Jardín Botánico is home to exotic plants, butterflies, turtles, and open spaces where kids can run freely while parents relax under the trees.

🛍️ 2. Kid-Friendly Medellin Shopping Malls | Free

About every month, the larger shopping malls set up a child-friendly attracting in the mall. Above is Santa Fe, the second largest shopping mall, and below is the permanent theme park in Tesoro, the fanciest mall in Medellin.

Tesoro also has a permanent theme park with a zip line on the top level called AFTERLAND.

🌲 3. Arví Park | $1.50 per person

Take the Metrocable (which is the only cost as entered the park is free) up to Arví Park, spanning 40,000 acres, and enjoy hiking trails, nature scavenger hunts, artisan markets, and local snacks. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and full of photo ops.

🌌 4. Planetarium | $3 per child

The Planetario de Medellín offers immersive space experiences, including stargazing shows and digital journeys through the universe.

🍦 5. Sweet Treats at Cafetería Art Dolce | <$5 per order

This whimsical café in Poblado serves up artistic desserts, including the only place I know of with creme brulee and kid-friendly vibes. Think cotton candy clouds, edible glitter, and creamy gelato.

Another option is the famous Amor Acuya heladeria (or ice cream shop) created by two Paisa brothers (Medellin locals are Paisa). This hidden gem doubles as a chocolate café and a mini art gallery, offering treats and activities kids can enjoy while adults sip coffee in peace.

🐟 6. Catch-Your-Own Trout Resto | $6 per trout

In the outskirts of Medellín, you’ll find Truchera Arcoiris, a rustic restaurant where kids can catch their own trout and watch it get grilled minutes later. It’s a delicious and memorable experience.

🎳 7. Bowling | $7 per person

There are several modern bowling alleys in Medellín, such as Bolera Suramericana or La Bolera de Mayorca or Super Bowl (pictured here), where you can enjoy food, music, and lanes designed for kids.

🌊 8. Splash Around at a Water Park | $8.50 per person

A perfect way to beat the heat (80F would be a hot day here), Medellín has three waterparks that I know of:

• Aeroparque Juan Pablo II (in Medellin)
• Parque Los Tamarindos (45 minutes from The Belmonte Penthouse to the West)
• Parque de las Aguas (45 minutes from The Belmonte Penthouse to the North)

These nearby water parks offer slides, lazy rivers, and splash zones for all ages.

🧪 9. Parque Explora Science Museum | $8.50

This hands-on science museum is a dream for curious minds. With interactive exhibits, a planetarium, and an aquarium, it’s ideal for a full family day out.

🍖 10. 369 DIY Korean BBQ | $9 per person

For adventurous young eaters, this DIY Korean BBQ spot is interactive and fun. Kids love grilling their own meat and trying new sauces.

Challenge the whole family with an age-appropriate escape room in Medellín. Many offer themes suitable for kids, from jungle adventures to detective mysteries.

A high-energy indoor park packed with trampolines, ninja courses, rope swings, and zip-style rides—Summit is Medellín’s ultimate air-filled playground for kids (and grown-ups) who want to bounce, climb, and fly.

If your kids love speed, head to one of the go-kart tracks like Kartódromo near Itagüí. It’s thrilling fun and great for both adults and children over a certain height.

Hike to Cascada La Mesenia or Salto del Buey or Salto del Ángel (pictured above) for family-friendly waterfall adventures. Pack swimsuits and snacks for a refreshing dip in nature.

Visit charming villages like Jardín, Santa Fe de Antioquia, or Jericó. With cobblestone streets, horseback rides, and artisan crafts, these towns offer a glimpse into Colombia’s heritage that even kids will enjoy.

🦛 16. Hacienda Napoles Safari | $37 for full pass

A wild safari-style theme park built on Pablo Escobar’s former estate—now home to animals, water slides, museums, and full-on family adventure just 4 hours from Medellín. You’d likely want to spend the night here and do two days at the park.

🚤 17. Guatapé & Fancy Car Boats | $40

Take a day trip to colorful Guatapé, a 5,500 acres man-made reservoir provindg 30% of Medellin energy needs, and rent one of the flashy, car-themed boats on the reservoir. Think: floating Lamborghinis with music and snacks.

🛻 18. ATV Tours | $45

Older kids and teens will love bouncing through trails on an ATV tour just outside the city—especially in areas like San Félix or Guarne.
