Villa Baviera (formerly Colonia Dignidad), 350km south of Santiago, was a Chilean government-sanctioned torture camp run by former Nazi Paul Schäfer until 2000. Schäfer sexually abused children and tortured Pinochet's political prisoners for three decades; most perpetrators remain unpunished.
Lots of smokers, especially young people. I couldn't sit in the park more than 5 minutes without getting a whiff.
1.5hrs to beaches and 1hr to ski resorts

I stayed in Lastarria, which is nice, but small and right next to an undesirable downtown area. Locals recommend Providencia and Vitacura.
